Inspiring brands and places : Atelier Cologne

Despite fierce competition between retail brands, we seldom find out products or places that truly make a difference, show a unique personality and engage people in the long run.

With this series of posts, I would like to introduce you with some of the brands and places that, according to me, really stand out from the crowd, thanks to their vision and their values but also through operational excellence.

Today, let’s zoom in on  ATELIER COLOGNE, a young “Maison de Parfum”  creating pure perfumes inspired by Eau de Cologne.

THE FOUNDERS

Atelier Cologne is basically a love story. A love story between the two founders Sylvie Ganter and Christophe Cervasel, who had long track records in the perfume industry before creating ATELIER COLOGNE in 2009 (and got married at the same time).

COLOGNE RE-INVENTED

Sylvie and Christophe took up the challenge of highly-concentrated cologne : the “Cologne Absolue”, which has an exceptional lasting power so that they are considered as real perfumes. Besides, they decided to offer a wide range of different fragrances, called “Collections” to address a much larger audience.

“CLEAN” PERFUMES ARE THE NEW HYPE

Since the beginning of the new century, simple and fresh perfumes are dominating the market. With their highly concentrated fruit and flower essential oils, ATELIER COLOGNE products meet the expectations of consumers, especially on the American and European markets, where strong and heady perfumes are no longer popular.

EACH CREATION TELLS A STORY

Sylvie and Christophe are inspired by their trips and the people they meet to create new fragrances. They wrap up the emotions that have contributed to give rise of  each and every creation on “Mood boards”.

EXPERIENTIAL STORES

ATELIER COLOGNE has 6 directly operated stores (3 in Paris, 2 in NYC and 1 in HK). The shops are designed like workshop with an industrial yet contemporary look and feel.

In this stores, shoppers can have their names engraved on the leather case of the perfume bottles.

INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION

Atelier Cologne is represented in 35 countries. In the US and Asia, the brand is visible in exclusive Department Stores (Bergdorf & Goodman, Naiman Marcus, Lane Crawford).

In France, Atelier Cologne is unlikely to open new directly-operated stores. However,  a recent deal with SEPHORA will allow french shoppers to discover the products throughout the country.

COMMERCIAL SUCCES

The brand has been profitable since the very begining. The annual turnover reached 15 million last year.
